About Pennsylvania, U.S., Veterans Burial Cards, 1777-2012

Contained in this database are index cards with the burial records of Pennsylvania veterans who participated in all armed conflicts in which the commonwealth (or colony) was involved. Beginning in 1929 these cards were created by the county Bureau of Veterans Affairs office, which still receives new cards on a regular basis from the Veterans Affairs office at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. The cards are divided into four series, then alphabetically by veteran surname. There are some exceptions to this system, such as the miscellaneous cards being filed in Series III.

Series included in this database:

  • Series I - This series contains cards that date from the beginning of the collection program in 1929 to roughly 1970. Included are veterans who served in conflicts dating from the French and Indian War through World War II.
  • Series II - This series contains cards produced in the 1970s through the mid-1990s. Veterans who served in the 20th century are prominent, although there are veterans from earlier periods included in this series as well.
  • Series III - This series contains any cards not included in Series II and could include veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Veterans whose gravestones were not identified by the local Veterans Affair Office until well after they were buried, such as Civil War veterans, are also contained in this collection.
  • Series IV - This series contains cards and lists from the Revolutionary War years to the year 2012.

When searching this collection it is advisable to browse all series, due to the somewhat haphazard compilation of the collection over time.
