About New Zealand, Teacher and Civil Service Examinations and Licenses, 1880-1920

This database contains two sets of records. Lists of New Zealand teachers’ examinations and licenses include the names of people who passed the teachers examinations and the area they are from. You’ll also find lists of individuals licensed to teach, the area of their teaching engagement, and their rank in the profession. Years included are 1880, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887, and 1890 to 1920 inclusive.

Lists of New Zealand civil service examination results include the names of people taking the examinations for Junior National and Education Board Junior and scholarships, National and Education Board Senior scholarships, and for free places in secondary schools, district high schools, and technical schools. There are also candidates from the Civil Service Junior and Senior Free Place Examinations who satisfied the pass requirements of one or other examination and candidates for entrance to the Civil Service (order of merit list). Years included are 1880, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1891, and 1893–1918 inclusive.

Lists vary but may provide name, publication date, residence, description of education, residence year, and where the person was working.
