This database contains a list of surnames listed in alphabetical order; each name is followed by a list of states and monthly meetings in which that surname appears. It is a cross-index to the collection entitled, U.S., Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940. The names have not been indexed but are in alphabetical order, making them easily searchable.

Use this index to determine the locations where the surname of a Quaker ancestor appears. It lists the state and meetings where that name is found and may provide clues to his moves or to individuals related to him. (see sample below)

Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940

The Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940 is part of Hinshaw’s effort to preserve and index all Quaker monthly meeting records. Data in the index was extracted from record books of 197 Quaker meetings in 17 states and represents about 25% of Quaker Meetings. Births, deaths, marriages, disownments, and removals are the principal kinds of data recorded.
