About Guerrero, Mexico, Civil Registration Marriages, 1863-1954

Civil registration began on a national level in Mexico in 1859, though enforcement and compliance were not always strict at first. This collection contains civil marriage records for the state of Guerrero. You’ll find the records in a number of different formats. Early records were often written in long, narrative-style entries. These were later supplanted by printed forms.

These records can contain a wealth of useful data. They often include the following:

  • groom: name, age, occupation, parents
  • bride: name, age, parents
  • witnesses
  • date and place of marriage

Remember that civil registration did not replace religious records, and you may be able to find evidence of your ancestor’s marriage in church registers as well.
