    Collection in context

In 1795, civil marriage records (or "Trouwboeken" in Dutch) were first collected in the Netherlands. Dutch law requires citizens to have a civil marriage registration. Often, a religious ceremony also was performed, but it was invalid without a civil registration. Couples choosing to have both types of marriages may have multiple marriage dates.

Before 1935, couples who wished to marry had to publicly declare their intent. This was often done in the bride's hometown, the groom's hometown,or an area in which either previously lived.
