About Lincolnshire History, Gazetteer, and Directory, 1856

This database provides a lot of historical and local information on Lincolnshire. The work begins with a general history and description of the county, which provides information on Lincolnshire's population, agriculture, minerals, roads, rivers, etc. It also includes the seats of the nobility, gentry, and clergy, and lists the magistrates and public officers. This portion of the work is followed by histories, topographies, and directories for the city of Lincoln and for each of the hundreds in the three divisions (named Lindsey, Holland, and Kesteven) of the county. For each of these areas, information is provided on the population, civil, and ecclesiastical jurisdictions, and Poor Law Unions, and directories and histories for each of their parishes, boroughs, towns, ports, villages, and hamlets are given. This work is of great worth to the genealogist because of the nature of the historical and local information provided and also because of the directories, which list the names and occupations of the heads of households.
