Couples wishing to marry in England at this time had to swear in an allegation that there were no impediments to the marriage when they applied for a marriage licence. The granting of the licence by the bishop meant that the couple could marry in any parish in the diocese. This database contains details extracted from allegations for marriage licenses in Hampshire from the registry of the Bishop of Winchester for the years 1689–1837.
